Dig Deep

Joseph Shipp’s sophomore album is out everywhere now!

At 42, Joseph Shipp recorded Dig Deep, his sophomore album, reflecting on midlife’s quieter moments. Building on his debut, Free, For A While (October 2022), Shipp continues to impress with his unique blend of folk, indie, and rock. Critics have praised his "distinctive voice" and "well-crafted stories" (Americana UK) and his "seamless fusion of genres" (Glide Magazine). Dig Deep, October 4th, explores artistic purpose and the inner world's rhythms with a nuanced, layered sound.

“This album was about tuning into the songs as they came and embracing the magic of everyday life,” Shipp says. He used five different tunings on a 1940s acoustic Gibson to weave an inviting, intimate sound, making listeners feel like old friends.

The album unfolds like a journey, starting with "Heavy Cold," a reflection on mortality and purpose. In "Open Up (To Me)," a Tom Petty-esque light pierces the darkness, while "Strange Voodoo" and "Phantasy" delve into life’s unexpected truths and enduring love. The title track, "Dig Deep," channels the dark, folky side of Elliott Smith, exploring themes of identity and self-discovery.

The second half of the album ranges from the playful "Milk," which contemplates choice, to the cinematic "Blanket," dealing with loss. The closing tracks, "Move into the Light" and "Half Moon Eyes," explore themes of light, shadow, and love.

Collaborating with producer Andrew Goldring, Shipp captured a spontaneous, authentic sound. “Andrew’s grounded yet experimental style was perfect for these songs,” Shipp notes.

Dig Deep marks a significant chapter in Shipp’s musical journey, deepening his connection with listeners through evolving sound and storytelling.
